ATLANTA MAYOR ANDRE DICKENS

MY PROGRESS

Mayor Andre Dickens has implemented a multifaceted strategy to stimulate economic growth and create job opportunities in Atlanta. His administration's efforts focus on workforce development, youth employment, and supporting local businesses to ensure a thriving economy for all residents.

Establishment of the Department of Labor and Employee Services

To centralize and enhance workforce development efforts, Mayor Dickens proposed legislation to establish the Department of Labor and Employee Services. This department oversees the city's labor initiatives, including WorkSource Atlanta, youth employment services, and the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Institute. By coordinating these programs, the department aims to streamline services and better address the employment needs of Atlanta's residents.

Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP)

Launched under Mayor Dickens' administration, the SYEP provides young Atlantans aged 14 to 24 with meaningful employment and internship opportunities during the summer months. The program has seen remarkable growth:

  • 2022: Over 3,000 youth were placed in paid positions across various industries.
  • 2023: More than 5,100 youth secured employment through the program.
  • 2024: The program expanded to hire over 5,700 young people, reflecting the city's commitment to empowering its youth.
  • 2025: The goal is to provide 6,000 job opportunities, demonstrating a continued investment in the future workforce.

Investments in Workforce Development

Mayor Dickens has prioritized partnerships to enhance workforce training and job readiness:

  • Atlanta Technical College Partnership: In collaboration with Acuity Brands, a $1.8 million endowment was established for Atlanta Technical College’s Center for Workforce Innovation. This investment supports the development of programs that equip residents with skills in high-demand sectors.
  • Workforce Development Pilot Program: A $50,000 contribution from the city, supplemented by $150,000 from Acuity Brands, launched a pilot program focused on workforce development. This initiative aims to prepare residents for careers in emerging industries, ensuring they are competitive in the evolving job market.

Support for Local Businesses and Economic Empowerment

Under Mayor Dickens' leadership, the city has secured nearly $3 million from America’s Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI) to improve food access in underserved communities. This funding not only addresses food insecurity but also stimulates economic activity by supporting local food enterprises, thereby creating jobs and revitalizing neighborhoods.
